CORK AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The montado is a semi-natural forest that depends on maintaining a balance between ecological networks and production systems, integrating aspects of socio-economic and environmental sustainability. The project “SHOUTOUT4SDGS: European cooperation for social responsibility” established partnerships to analyze the cork oak forest as an example of sustainability, through the analysis of its links to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SCIENCE & ART IN THE MONTADO: VERTEBRATE FAUNA

A collection of eight illustrations of vertebrate animals (in other words, with an internal skeleton) where we explore the high natural value of the montado and the services the fauna of this semi-natural ecosystem provide.
This exhibition shows the importance of knowing something ‘inside and out’. This is, to know all the relevant information, even that which is not evident at first glance. In this specific case, we are referencing the importance of knowing the species, understanding its habitat, and exploring the interaction between the two.

FROM THE WORLD TO THE MONTADO

These illustrations were inspired by and are complementary to a set of songs from the concert “Ambient Music” that somewhat refer to themes related to the environment.
Everyday we hear about sustainability, climate change, and various other environmental issues. But do we truly understand them?
Each music, a theme. Each theme, a story. Each story, a person.
From the amazon to the montado, eight environmental investigators and technicians agreed to share a story in the first person and to show how we can contribute, here and now, to a better environment.

SCIENCE & ART IN THE MONTADO: PLANT-INSECT INTERACTIONS

Insects may act as agentes of protection, dispersal or fertilization for plants, just as plants provide food and nesting sites for them. In this exhibition, we illustrate a positive plant-insect interaction (mutualismo) and a negative plant-insect interaction (herbivory). The honeybee (Apis mellifera) aids reproduction in flowering plants, simultaneously receiving food for its troubles. On another note, the oak pinhole borer (Platypus cylindrus) resides and feeds in tunnels it constructs in the trunk of the cork oak tree (Quercus suber), which eventually causes death to the tree, as its sap circulation is cut off and the fungi the pinhole borer transports spreads.
